Helping Students Set Goals for the New Semester

Welcome to 2026!

At the beginning of second semester I like to have students do a little self-reflection. We usually go over the midterm (first semester final) exam, then review the learning targets for the semester and what students still need to work on. I explain that while I won’t be reassessing the students on those specific learning targets again, much of the material in math is cumulative. For example, in algebra if you are still having trouble solving linear equations, you are going to have a hard time solving a system of equations or solving quadratic equations. In geometry, if you don’t know properties of parallel lines and angles, you may have difficulty with proving polygons are similar.

Once students have evaluated where they are, then they can set goals for the future. I like to teach my students how to set SMART goals. I typically use the doodle notes from Math Giraffe explained in this post.

Having a clear picture of what students have already accomplished and what their goals are moving forward is a great way to start the semester. How do you set your students up for success in the new semester?
